Thank you everyone who helped me with this awesome promotion – it’s because of your tweets, posts, and downloads that I succeeded!

My last post was about the trials and tribulations of self-publishing my first book and using KDP Select for selling and promotion.  I promised a follow-up post, so here it is.

I ran my KDP Select promotion August 22 and 23.  It just happened to coincide with my birthday, which is August 22; so I thought it would be fun to be the one giving the gifts this year.  About six weeks ago I began preparing for my first-ever event.

Now, I want you to remember, this is my first book.  The writing wasn’t hard, nor the editing, but the marketing has been a series of ups and downs and flying by the seat of my pants.  Everything I know I have learned from books, online research, forums, groups, posts, chat rooms and trial and error.  The one thing that I can say without hesitation is that the community of Indie Authors is fantastic.  While there are a few who like to wax negatively and cause a ruckus at times, most are the exact opposite – helpful and accommodating.  I was welcomed with open arms.  I received assistance from some of the most unexpected places and made a lot of new friends and acquaintances.  The one thing I learned is not to be afraid to ask questions.

About six weeks ago I began preparing for the big two-day event.  The book was on Amazon and I had sold a few copies (to friends and family mostly).  I knew that the book would be doomed without having any posted reviews, even if it was offered for free, so I emailed review sites and petitioned the Facebook review sites I belong to.  (I do a fair amount of book reviews in my spare time, so people are getting used to seeing my name).

I also joined a Facebook group of twitter posters several months ago and began faithfully joining in the weekly barrage of tweets.  I’m sure it helped, as I got lots of retweets and a few questions.

I made it a point to promote my book where allowed on the other writer’s communities I belong to, mostly Facebook groups.  While this seemed to take a giant bite out of my writing time I felt it necessary to get my “Great American Novel” out to the public.

Goodreads and Shelfari were suggested as possible sites to list the book.  I think I will be better off on the second round of promotions, as I didn’t really understand Goodreads, but I am taking the time to learn.  I’m also taking a Twitter course – it had me tweeped!  I wasn’t too proud to beg my Facebook friends to help me with my promotion and several of them did, sharing each and every post I wrote.  I tried hard not to be a pest, even during the promotion.  But I did share a couple of good reviews, and features on other sites.

I signed up for several author interviews and two radio programs.  I spent a lot of time promoting the book in this way and it definitely helped.  Other authors were kind enough to allow me to talk about Inzared, my writing style, my bio, etc., on their blogs and I even did one giveaway prior to the promotion.  The only thing I didn’t do was a blog tour or blog hop (but I am ready for next time).  Mostly, leaving the tours out of the loop was my fear of the unknown (and not being sure I would have the time to devote to those projects).

Six weeks prior to the event I began going over a list given to me by a fellow author for promotion.  I contacted owners of free book sites, introduced my book, and myself and asked to be listed on August 22 and 23.  All in all I think I had about 10 sites contacted and replies received, so I believed I was all set.  I didn’t pay for any promotion.  Some sites offer a better listing if you do, but I decided not to do that this time.  Next time I have even more sites and Facebook groups to contact.

I was given two online news release sites for free press releases but I couldn’t figure out how to use them, so didn’t.  A couple of days before the free promo I began using “teasers” on the FB promotional sites I belong to and my own FB page and website.  Funny thing, I didn’t think of using my blog until the second day – go figure!  Also, I didn’t think of using a “Facebook Event” but lucky for me, another author posted one for his book on my page and I jumped right in and did the same thing.  We gave each other encouragement through the whole promotion.

Ok, here’s where my “newbieness” comes in.  I began tweeting and sharing on August 22.  I thought if I got 1,000 downloads in the two days I would be ecstatic.  I had no idea what to expect, as this was my first time.  By noon I had over 1,500 downloads!  I was more than ecstatic – my heart was in my throat.  I kept my fingers crossed and watched the numbers climb.

I must have checked my stats page on Amazon every two seconds for two days.  It is so exciting to see something you have worked so hard on become something so sought after – even if it was free.  They liked me, they really liked me!

By the time I went to bed after midnight on the first day I had roughly 5,700 downloads.  And the second day was just as good.  I ended up with a total of 10,081 downloads in two days!

I know now (from asking other authors) that my number is not the highest (nor the lowest) to be downloaded during a promotion, but I was in very good shape.  The day after the promotion I sold more books in one day than I had in the past two months.  And, I finally got some borrows (from Kindle Prime members).

Although I am still listed in the “starving author” section, I am extremely pleased with the KDP Select Program.  It may not be for everyone, but it worked for me.  I plan to release my next book in the Inzared series in October or November and will wait until then for another promotion.  I am getting more reviews every day (ugh, I even got a 2-star) but I realize it’s all part of the game.

I can’t wait to compare my next promotion on Amazon with the first.  Until then, I guess I’ll write!
