L.Leander was born and raised in Michigan’s beautiful lower peninsula. She developed a love of reading at an early age and many of her happiest memories are of spending lazy Saturdays at the local library, where the small-town librarian introduced her to the classics. “I read all the time, and it got me into trouble often,” she admits. “I was always promising ‘I’ll be there in a minute’ when called to do household chores, and then read rapidly to get to the end of a chapter. More than once I got caught with a flashlight under the covers long past my bedtime trying to finish up my latest book when I was supposed to be sleeping. I remember writing bits and pieces of stories early in grade school, but my first real short story was in the 6th grade. I won an award for the piece, which was about three mice who traveled to the moon (which was made of blue cheese). I wrote a few more stories, but when I was fifteen I learned to play guitar and began writing songs instead. The next years of my life were spent raising a family and penning songs on the side. I had plenty that were rejected, but did have success. I spent much of my working life copy editing and rewriting business letters and developed a sharp eye for mistakes and rewording. It wasn’t until I moved to Mazatlan, Mexico in 2005 that I sat down one night, began to write, and suddenly, I had two books written about the circus.
Why the circus? “Because I was always interested as a child in the razzle-dazzle of the small-time circuses that traveled through our rural towns. I always thought it would be great to run away and join the circus and I was especially entranced with the elephant acts. When I began writing INZARED Queen of the Elephant Riders the words seemed like a dam that had burst. I couldn’t get them on paper fast enough. I loved researching facts. I decided to put my character in a Gypsy circus because I loved the fortune tellers in the side shows, the mystery that surrounded them, their exotic look.”
INZARED Queen of the Elephant Riders is Ms. Leander’s first novel. The sequel is nearly finished and will be published in the fall of 2012. Ms. Lleander is currently working on the third book in the series. Visit http://lleander.com for more information or email the author at firstname.lastname@example.org
